Happy New Year from Tumaini Tanzania! Thank you for helping to make 2014 our students' best year yet. As we look ahead to an exciting 2015, we celebrate ten highlights of Tumaini's past year. TUMAINI TOP TEN FROM 2014:
Ten Female Scholars
Ten of the twenty new students we welcomed to our scholarship program this year are young women, reflecting our recognition of the ability of women to uplift their community--and the power of education to help make that happen.
Nine Years of Tumaini
2014-2015 marks the ninth year since a group of thoughtful, dedicated students helped establish Tumaini Tanzania by seeking tutoring, working incessantly, and caring for their classmates and families.
Eight Students at University
Eight of our oldest scholars are studying at universities across Tanzania, excelling in degree programs in medicine, education, and engineering.
Seven Days in Tanzania
Our Board members spent seven days in Tanzania, meeting with all our students, visiting the homes of our newest scholars, working with and learning from our local partners, hosting a large feast, and participating in a student-led workshop.
Sixty-Six Students
In 2014, we partnered with 66 current scholars from the Sakila region, studying in Forms One to Four, Teachers' College, Advanced Levels (Forms Five and Six), and university programs across the country.
Five Graduates
We celebrated that five of our students from our first class, who joined Tumaini Tanzania when they were 14-years-old and graduated from Teachers' College and Vocational School last year, gained employment! One works in the tourism industry, hoping to become a tour guide with a company, and four are now serving as public primary school teachers throughout Tanzania, sharing with other students the education they received.
Four Local Partners
We continue to be so thankful for our four main local partners in Tanzania--Msoffe, Mbwambo, Mayo, and Kiwale--headmasters and teachers who are trusted advisers to our organization, good friends to us, and strong mentors to our students. We are especially proud of Kiwale, a teacher from Nkoanekoli Secondary School who worked hard to earn a Fulbright Scholarship from the U.S. Embassy to teach Swahili at a university in Louisiana this year! We have enjoyed having him in the United States with us this year, serving American students.
Three Cities Full of Tumaini
We are very grateful for three U.S. communities that hosted fundraisers for Tumaini Tanzania over the past year: Charlotte, NC; Houston, TX; and Philadelphia, PA. Thanks to all of you who joined us in these cities to learn more about our work. We look forward to gathering with more friends in additional cities in the new year! (Please let us know if you are interested in hosting a Tumaini party!)
Two Secondary Schools
We continued to strengthen our partnership with two secondary schools in neighboring villages of northeast Tanzania, Nkoanekoli Secondary School and Sakila Secondary School. We are always impressed by and thankful for the wisdom, patience, and dedication of the teachers and administrators at these two schools.
One Simple Way to Change Lives and Transform Communities
You can help these Tanzanian students unlock their own potential--and, in turn, transform their own communities--by investing in their education. As always, 100% of every donation directly benefits students in Tanzania. (Our Board is committed to covering all administrative costs.) Tumaini Tanzania is a 501(c)(3) organization, so your donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.
